TIM EDEN-CALCOTT

 Teacher

"So many people, from all walks of life, share their positive memories and experiences with their own children through Kidsfirst, and our families really appreciate the work that we do.”

Being a stay-at-home Dad led Tim Eden-Calcott into a career that he really loves.

After discovering he thoroughly enjoyed the play centre experience, friends and family suggested early childhood education might be his calling.

So Tim added to his Honours in Political Science and History with a Post-Graduate Diploma in ECE through Victoria University. During his teacher training he spent seven weeks at Kidsfirst Lincoln, developed a love for the kindergarten model, and he’s never looked back.

“I really enjoy working for an organisation that values children’s play, is supportive of their staff and has a great amount of human resources to make a real difference in my development as a teacher.”

He enjoys being able to combine work with his own passions.

“My interest in gardening, bug hunting, or even rockets, have all had a chance to emerge. With the children’s interests, I have had the chance to be a pirate again, explore their view of the world and learn alongside them.”

And he says it’s nice to know he’s got many other male colleagues throughout the Kidsfirst network.

“Kidsfirst is well above the national average for male teaching staff, and I have got to know a few of them in the time I have worked here. All the male teachers I have met have been very friendly, supportive and sharing of their knowledge with me, which has been great as a new teacher.”

“And that is largely due to the feedback from peers, my own research and professional development opportunities I have attended. I am lucky to be in a team that really has embraced me as an individual and supported my teaching journey. My ideas have been taken on board and I feel a real part of the decision making process.”

Most of all, he loves working for an organisation that he is truly proud to be part of.

“So many people, from all walks of life, share their positive memories and experiences with their own children through Kidsfirst, and our families really appreciate the work that we do.”
